There have been many unfounded claims surrounding Ocean Guardian shark deterrents, do they actually work and does it attract sharks. We are finally going to set the record straight with our marine biologist, and shark conservationist, Amanda Elizabeth.
The most common myth is that the protective electrical field generated by Ocean Guardian’s Shark Shield attracts rather than deters sharks. Two studies were conducted during 2013 and 2016, which pleaded against this claim, as it was directly tested 6-20 metres from sharks (great whites included).
The second myth we busted is the claim that Ocean Guardian’s Shark Shield is immune to Great Whites. Several independent research studies were conducted using Ocean Guardian’s FREEDOM7TM once using a baited target; all great whites were repelled at an average distance of 1.13 metres.
On the second test Ocean Guardian’s FREEDOM7TM was switched off during this time 16 breaches and 27 surface interactions had occurred. With the FREEDOM7TM turned on, there had been zero breaches and only two surface interactions.
This ultimately proves the overall effectiveness of Ocean Guardian’s Shark Shield Technology. “Ocean Guardian’s Shark Shield technology affects the behaviours of sharks and deters sharks attacking from depths. Given the high energetic cost, a shark will be less likely to breach if they sense an abnormality in their environment, such as the Ocean Guardian electrical field.” Another one bites the dust!
