Today, Lindsay Lyon, shark advocate and Managing Director of Shark Shield has announced that he will commence a tour across Australia in an attempt to educate Australians on shark safety. Following yet another attack in NSW last week, Lyon will be scheduling seminars to bust shark myths and educate water users on how they can protect themselves in the water.
Lyon says, “Shark encounters are not something that are simply going to go away, we need to focus on educating Australians on what is fact and what is fiction while providing them with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
The tour will commence in Western Australia next month with Lyon taking to the road on the 5th of October. He will be covering the coastal towns of South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales over the month of October.
“We are hoping to engage the local Mayors of each town to get onboard with the program and reach as many people as possible, such as Dive Clubs and Board Rider Clubs. A recent study by the University of Western Australia Oceans Institute has provided proof that there are deterrents currently available to protect anyone from surfers, spear fishermen, divers to kayakers. The issue is many are unaware, I hope to change this,” said Lyon.
Topics covered in the presentation will include:
– Shark fact and fiction
– 10 ways to protect yourself from Sharks
– Independent research and testing results
– Options readily available to Australians
– Q&A with Lindsay Lyon
